Dear President,As your District Chairperson for Diabetes Awareness in Sarawak 08-09, l take this opportunity to say something about my task and Diabetes itself.
My task is simply to provide you with more information on the Diabetes Awareness. Diabetes is so important because so many people around the world get it. The incidence is increasing at a rapid rate in the fast developing Asian countries as our lifestye has changed so much. We tend to eat more cakes, chocolates and drink Coca-Cola instead of plain water. We sit more than we walk. The important thing is it kills so many people every year. Before it kills you, it would first cause your organs to fail functioning; your kidneys to fail that will lead to dialysis, your heart artery to clot badly, stroke, your peripheral nerves to reduce sensation, the small clean wound to become severely infected that may lead to amputation of limb performed to stop the infection spreading and of course blindness.
Lions Club International has put so much emphasis on Diabetes Awareness because it is only through awareness that we can prevent the onset of this disease. How many of you know the risk factors that cause Diabetes? Once you know the risks you can start to act to reduce the risks of getting Diabetes. As far as awareness is concerned you can start to plan and work out something to tell everyone around you how to stay away from this deadly disease.
This year both District Chairpersons ie Dr. Lee and l myself will do something slightly different and exciting. The District Chairperson in charge of each area has decided to give award to the best club of that particular area in this Diabetes Awareness project during the MD Convention in Johore next year. If more than one club carrying out this awareness project, other clubs in the joint project that fulfill the criteria will also be given the awards of the same kind.
