Paul Boyd's parents and brother issued a statement through the Vancouver Police Department on Monday, describing Boyd, 39, as a "big, strong man whose appearance could be intimidating to those who did not know him."

Boyd, who was also "gentle and kind," was "diagnosed with bipolar disorder - manic depression - an illness for which he has received constant and usually effective treatment" since his early 20s, but he was well most of the time, the statement said.

"Periodically, he would suffer periods of mania and depression which could produce vivid paranoid delusions that made him fear imagined threats," the statement said.

"At the time of his death, he was in the midst of one of these frightening episodes," it said.

However, the family's statement did not address the police shooting.

Boyd was a gifted animator who worked in Vancouver's animation industry for 15 years, including directing the highly successful Ed, Edd N Eddy series on the Cartoon Network.

Boyd was shot during the evening of Aug. 13 near Granville Street and 16th Avenue after police said he began assaulting officers, who were responding to a 911 call, with a potentially lethal weapon.

Police said Boyd began assaulting two officers when a third officer, who's been in the force for three years, fired at him in self-defence.

More witnesses to be interviewed

Two witnesses have told CBC News slightly different versions of the event.

Christine Adkins said she did not see the alleged assaults but saw the man attempting to flee when police fired at him in the middle of traffic. Jonathan Menzies compared the man's death to an execution.

Police have heard someone may have videotaped the shooting or the moments leading up to Paul Boyd's death, but so far they haven't seen the tape, Const. Howard Chow said.

Besides the dozens of witnesses statements, investigators still have more than 20 witnesses to interview and police don't want to taint the statements by discussing details of the shooting, Chow said.

"As you can see, there [are] still many witnesses that will be coming forward, and we'd rather that they had the opportunity to talk to our investigators before reading, or hearing about it on the television," Chow said."

"So in the game, the Eds run the risk of having their scams turned on them by the other kids in the neighborhood. Players will definitely find a huge assortment of locations and characters ripped right out of the 'toon.

Each Ed has his own set of levels to complete. They're all side-scrolling fare, but each Ed has his own style of movement and attacks - Edd, for example, chucks dictionaries, while Eddy burps and slams his noggin down on the enemies. If you find yourself needing an extra boost of energy, item pick-ups can be activated on the touch-screen.

What's cool about the game is that the visual style borrows heavily from the cartoon, right down to the squiggle outline effect of the characters on the lower screen. There's a neat "stencil" style to the sprite animation, as if the characters are constructed of head, body and arm parts that move and flow with an eerie smoothness.

On top of the platforming elements, there's a handful of unlockable minigames: Whack a Mole has been turned into a gross-fest in "Whack a Zit" where players tap at rising pimples on Ed's back before the burst. There's also a pie-throwing challenge where players flick the desserts up at enemies on the top screen."

"The crew of Ed, Edd n Eddy conducted a panel Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con and provided the following information about the future of the series. As previously reported on Toon Zone News there will not be a sixth season of the series at this time since they chose to put their time into making a movie instead. The movie is tentatively titled Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show and the plot will focus on the Eds searching for Eddy's brother. The elusive character will finally make an appearance in the movie.

The crew additionally noted that despite the show being created and produced in Canada, it does not air in that country. Thus, they love to see the reaction they get when they visit the United States. They also screened a cut segment from the episode "Take This Ed and Shove It."

There you have it. You really should not miss this movie. Especially since Eddy's brother will be making an appearance. This should be one great movie.
