Movie Review: Disney's High School Musical 2 - We're All in This Together

When I first reviewed the original Disney movie High School Musical, I had no idea what I was getting into. Before I watched it, I believed (rather naively I might add) that this was going to be just another TV movie concocted for kids, some pabulum-like entertainment that wouldn’t hold my interest.

Boy, was I wrong, and then some. The first film was intelligent and fast-paced, with bright young actors and actresses who brought out the best in the music and dance numbers. Repeated viewings didn’t lessen how much I enjoyed the film, and since my daughter (now six) has watched it at least twenty times since its premiere, I’ve had plenty of time to absorb the overall message of the film and understand its lasting impact.

Of course, along the way, it became a cultural powerhouse that has affected people of all ages. Students everywhere are putting on their own versions of the film in school productions, and the concept of “musical theater” is now more popular than it has been since John Travolta strutted his stuff in Grease (1978). My daughter understood right from the start that this was something bigger than “big,” just the way I did when I sat on the living room floor and stared in excited wonder at the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show while my parents felt they were nothing more than a flash in the pan. Yeah, right!

After my first review received over 2,500 comments (and still counting), I realized that High School Musical was a Disney juggernaut comparable in some ways to the success of the Fab Four with tweens and pre-tweens like my daughter. Anything somehow related to the movie (posters, lunchboxes, backpacks, pajamas, T-shirts, toys, etc.) was selling out fast and, as the young stars made the rounds on talk shows and other appearances, the squealing girls certainly reminded me of that Beatles phenomenon from my youth.

With my skepticism thrown to the wind, this time I was enthusiastically on board for the exciting ride and my daughter and I watched the movie together as I sat with pen and pad in hand. I can happily announce that director Kenny Ortega and his singing and dancing minions (all the original cast returns, even Zac Efron with slightly darker hair from his tour of duty in Hairspray) deliver a slam-dunk sequel that in some ways is even better than the original (and I don’t think I’ve said that since... gulp... Godfather II).

In an obviously more lavish (and thus expensive) production, all the stops are pulled out as the East High kids prepare for summer vacation. The old stomping grounds at their Albequerque high school (the film was actually shot in Utah) are revisited during the opening number “What Time Is It?” We briefly see Troy (Efron) and Gabriela’s (Vanessa Hudgens) tormentor Mrs. Darbus (Alyson Reed) from the first film, but she is merely part of a fast-paced exposition that sets the East Siders free for what should be a carefree summer. The kids go through the now familiar hallways, cafeteria, and eventually finish on a high note on the outside campus with the school building in the background. The message is clear: school is out for summer; let the party begin.

Unfortunately, reality wriggles its way into the story. Troy and his teammates play basketball with his father (Bart Johnson), who happens to also be the team’s coach. Dad/coach establishes the idea that summer is also a good time to make some money to either buy a car, get things they want to buy, or perhaps save for college. This is the pivotal point in the rising action, for Troy’s concern about the cost of college leads him and his friends to take jobs at local resort. Unbeknownst to them, this has all been set-up by the snooty Sharpay (played with a touch of evil glee by Ashley Tisdale) in order for her to get closer, much closer, to Troy.

As the old gang descends on an upper-crusty New Mexico country club, we discover that Sharpay’s parents own the place, and she has not learned her lesson from the first movie and still foolishly has her eyes focused on Troy Bolton. Troy has wisely found a way for all his buds from East High, along with his favorite gal Gabriela, to get hired with him, making the situation ripe for sparks to fly as the annual talent show literally sets the stage for conflict.

There are solid dance numbers performed throughout, with some of the ancillary stars from the first film getting a little more to say, do, and sing this time around. The best one is “I Don’t Dance” set on a baseball field under a crystal clear blue desert sky. Here, Chad (Corbin Bleu) and Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) face-off in a battle of wits and physical prowess. It is what was once called a “showstopper” and manages to lift the spirits while propelling the plot forward nicely, slipping Ryan into the “in” crowd he never thought he could ever join.

Sharpay somehow manages to suck Troy into singing with her in the talent competition, based on the notion that it will help him land a college scholarship (and she mistakenly believes this will gain Troy’s affection). This temporarily alienates his friends and his lady love, thus giving Efron even more opportunities in the spotlight to flex his acting muscles. He earnestly proves his worth here, singing stronger and better than in the original and showcasing the maturity that will inevitably make him a really big star like the previously mentioned Travolta.

As in the first film, major conflicts seem to be quickly dissolved or resolved at the end. I won’t ruin the denouement for those who have not seen the film, but let it suffice to say that the overriding theme of the first movie (we’re all in this together) resonates in this sequel, and by the time we see everyone singing and dancing in a rousing finale, we can rest assured that all will be well with the East Side gang until the next sequel (if Disney can somehow find a way to lasso Efron’s rising star).

Credit must be given to all involved in this production, especially director Ortega. Obviously Disney gave him the time, money, and talent to mount a superior production, and (just as he did in the first film and Cheetah Girls 2) Mr. Ortega knows his audience and shows deference to their cultural touchstones, such as previous Disney films they have all grown up with.

The sub-textual references to all the princess movies are obvious here, with Sharpay literally in her ivory tower staring down at Gabriella and Troy, her dashing Prince Charming to be sure. No matter how much Sharpay stares into the mirror, Gabriela will still end up being the fairest of them all and manage to snag her Prince in the process. All the sprinklers in the world can’t be turned on to douse that kind of love, and Ortega not only knows that his audience understands that but he also respects it, too.

Thus, I tip my cap to all involved in making this wonderful film. It actually does more than entertain; it motivates kids (and their parents) to get up and dance and sing. Besides the aerobic benefits from all this, it’s just good, sweet fun and, in an ever more troubling world, we can all use that.

You don't have to worry about "Breaking Free" from the "Start of Something New" because the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack will "Get'cha Head in the Game" and, if history serves, "Bop to the Top."

If you didn't catch at least one of those "High School Musical" song references, you're in a itty-bitty clique that didn't see the made-for-Disney Channel movie, listen to the soundtrack or go to the arena concert tour of this multi-platform pop-culture phenomenon responsible for the best-selling album of 2006.

Or maybe you're just in denial.

Whatever the case, everyone can catch up with Troy, Gabriella and their East High classmates before "High School Musical 2" debuts Friday on the Disney Channel with the soundtrack's 11 new tunes.

This time around, school's out and poolside hijinks replace the original locker-lined backdrop. Just like the bouncy "Saved by the Bell" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" gangs before them, the Wildcats are spending their summer at a ritzy country club. Some simply lounge. Others have part-time jobs. Everyone sings.

Naturally, the catchy sun-soaked songs tackle seasonal specific topics, such as bemoaning those summertime gigs with almost every percussion instrument known to man ("Work This Out") and playing baseball amid a heavy "hey batter, batter" chorus ("I Don't Dance").

Unlike its fun-but-kinda-flat predecessor, "High School Musical 2" successfully embeds some late '80s/early '90s candied nostalgia within its mega-produced mega-mixed mega-beats, although typical "High School Musical" fans — ahem, squealy 14-year-old girls — will probably be more thankful for totally way more Troy.

Smiley Zac Efron, who transcended the small-screen as Link Larkin in this summer's "Hairspray," has much more of a vocal presence on the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as East High's conflicted jock/drama nerd Troy, most notably with his synth-savvy Michael Jackson-style solo "Bet on It."

Teens and tweens will dig "You Are the Music in Me," Troy's gushy ballad with Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), and its more rockin' reprise featuring Veruca Salt-flavored temptress Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale). Parents, however, will appreciate the wholesome affirmation of songs like "All for One" and "Everyday."

Everyone else, meanwhile, shouldn't deny themselves the cheesy pleasure of it all.

CHECK THIS OUT: "What Time Is It." Sure, it's already August, but summer of '07 will feel fresh again after just one listen to this full-bodied supersong that's the most reminiscent of "We're All in This Together," the popular pep rally anthem that closed out the first film.

Can't say. Really - you wouldn't have wanted to know if Harry Potter survived Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' finale, right? And before you say, "Oh, but that's different.

The original film, which debuted in 2006, was a phenomenon. There is no reason to think that this one won't be, as well. And if you (or, more likely, your children), liked the first one, you're a safe bet to like the sequel, as well.

Wait, who are we kidding? Fans of the film didn't like it, they loved it, beyond all reason. So you will be either glad or horrified to learn that the plot of High School Musical 2 is just as easily digestible, with an equally positive message, and that the songs are insanely catchy, so much so that your children are going to be singing them for the next six months.

You have been warned.

The story picks up at the end of the school year, with Troy, Gabriella and the gang getting jobs at a resort owned by Sharpay's family. Unbeknownst to them, it's a ruse for Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) to try to steal Troy away from Gabriella. If you are anticipating themes of avoiding temptation and staying true to yourself, all set to music and over-the-top dance numbers, you evidently know your Disney movies.

OK, so it's not the most original plot. So what? Kids are going to freak over it, and watch it again and again and again. And that's just the first week.

All of which means a little more free time for parents. Having Fabulous or I Don't Dance stuck on an endless loop in your head is a small price to pay.

Kenny Ortega, the director and choreographer for both the original film and the sequel, once again stages incredibly elaborate dance sequences, though nothing in High School Musical 2 hits the heights of We're All In This Together, the rousing finale in the first movie (and, in fact, I Don't Dance is downright silly, even in this context).

But Tisdale is once again great as Sharpay - her performance of Fabulous is the best thing in the movie - and Lucas Grabeel gets his chance to shine as her long-suffering brother Ryan.

Oh, and the kiss? Please. You'll have to see for yourself.

The makers of High School Musical 2 wanted to avoid repeating themselves. They have succeeded. They have delivered a sequel that is both zanier and more dramatic than the original.

High School Musical 2, which premieres at 8 p.m. Friday on Disney Channel, celebrates summer in splashy style. Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) surreptitiously lures Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) to work at her parents' country club. He inadvertently angers her by bringing along girlfriend Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) and their East High friends.

The wackiness comes mainly from Tisdale, whose broad performance would fit on Saturday Night Live.

The heaviest drama falls to Efron. Troy suffers a crisis of conscience when he succumbs to Sharpay's maneuvering and falls away from his pals. Efron's fans will swoon at his appealing confusion.

Director Kenny Ortega guides the sequel with affection and style. His staging of Sharpay's "Fabulous" number salutes everyone from Madonna to Esther Williams. Troy leads the kitchen staff through "Work This Out," a modern spin on vintage Disney production numbers.

The musical high point is "I Don't Dance," an exuberant face-off between Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel) and Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu).

This clever production number mixes baseball, dance and song. "I Don't Dance" is especially welcome because the sequel, in its most serious lapse, goes 25 minutes without characters breaking into song.

The most memorable melody is "You Are the Music in Me," a lovely duet for Hudgens and Efron, who does his own singing in the sequel. Sharpay later puts her Las Vegas spin on the song.

But she can't wreck the song or the plot. High School Musical 2 is going to provide the soundtrack to a lot of young lives this summer.

By MIKE McDANIEL
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Oh, boy, just what have I gotten myself into?

I'm in the Stardust Room of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, but the luxury locale belies what's happening. The stars of High School Musical 2 are in the house, and there's a din as press people try to get some one-on-one time with the principals.

Good luck. It seems like everyone in Beverly Hills wants to spend a few minutes with Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Monique Coleman, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel and Corbin Bleu.

Since HSM debuted in January 2006 virtually under the critics' radar, it's been seen by 170 million people worldwide, has won two Emmys and has sold almost 8 million copies on DVD. The HSM soundtrack sold 7 million copies in the United States alone (the top seller of 2006) and posted nine singles on the top 100 charts. (That's not a misprint.)

The soundtrack led to a tour to 40 cities in the United States and Canada plus venues in South America, where cast members played to sold-out stadiums.

Grabeel and Coleman both cite a performance in São Paulo, Brazil, as a defining moment. More than 65,000 people attended.

"Now, that's something I would never do if it weren't for High School Musical," Grabeel said. "Things like that you can mark off the '10 things to do before you die' list."

Coleman recalled "a little girl whose face I'll never forget.

"She bawled her eyes out from the moment the show started to well after we were on the bus (to leave). I was worried she would stow away in our luggage. We live out what people imagine being a rock star is like."

HSM also has drawn celebrity fans. Michael Jackson took his kids to see the tour stop in Las Vegas.

"He shook all of our hands, and he thanked us for all the joy we brought to his kids," said Tisdale. "For someone that huge to really enjoy it and have so much fun, that's really cool."

The original HSM also inspired amateur performances. Some 1,500 high school productions of High School Musical have been licensed so far, and 2,000 are projected by year's end.

"The kids are demanding their school teachers and their music teachers to do this production," said Adam Sanderson, vice president of brand marketing for Disney/ABC Cable Group.

At least one of those productions occurred here. St. Francis Episcopal staged the show in May.

"It got the most overwhelming response to any show we've produced at the school," said Anice Duytschaver, a St. Francis parent who served as costume director for the 8th grade production.

"We were sold out for all three performances. Usually our audience is the church and school community but this attracted people beyond that.

But here's the deal: HSM was not a very good movie. The script was not terribly original, the acting was merely sufficient, and the sugary ending could lead to lockjaw if you weren't carrying insulin.

That makes me an idiot, I know, since 170 million people can't be wrong. But the way I saw it, HSM worked anyway because there were singing and dancing. And it told an honest story about learning to express yourself and follow your dreams. There were heart and spirit and purity and wholesomeness — values too easily tossed to the side by the majority of people making teen films today.

HSM clicked because the cliques it depicts were recognizable. Duytschaver said Abe Matamoros, who played Troy in the St. Francis Episocopal production "really is Troy. He plays for the Dynamo training team, he's the student body president and kids look up to him. But here he jumps on stage and has the lead in the musical."

HSM also worked because it was funny, the story made you feel good and, hey, those songs had really strong hooks.

Here's some better news: High School Musical 2, which premieres at 7 p.m. Friday on Disney Channel, is better than the original in every way.

In HSM2, all the principals are back. This time, school is almost over, and everyone's hunting for a summer job.

Sharpay (Tisdale), still licking her wounds from her humiliation at the East High winter musical, comes up with an idea she believes will restore her position in the high school order. It will require some cooperation from her parents and brother Ryan (Gabreel) and some deception that will involve Troy (Efron) and his girlfriend Gabriella (Hudgens) and all their friends.

Sharpay's plan includes landing Troy a job at her country club and putting some distance between him and Gaby. She then must convince him to perform with her at the club's Midsummer Night's Talent Show.

However, all does not come off as planned. Troy works it so that all his friends, including Gaby, also get jobs at the country club. That only makes Sharpay work harder to separate Troy and Gaby, tempting him with things he desperately wants (namely, a basketball scholarship).

Along the way, the cast breaks out into dance and song with engaging regularity. If you thought HSM was warm and infectious, hold on to your iPods.

"What's grand about this is this cast and the energy that they have and the enthusiasm that every single person has," says Kenny Ortega, who returns as director and choreographer.

That's saying something, because another secret to the original movie's success was its energy. But Ortega's right: The bar has been raised for HSM2, and everybody kicks it up a notch.

"It starts off with a bang," says Efron, and he's right, too. It's an end-of-school song-and-dance showstopper called What Time Is It.

Midway through the movie comes I Don't Dance, a song that got me on my feet.

"It's completely organic," said Coleman (she plays Taylor). "It comes out of a real scene. It doesn't have that huge buildup: da-da-ta-yum!, and now our huge musical number!"

The song and dance take place on a baseball diamond, with swings and pitches and tosses to first base worked into the choreography — that's what Coleman means by organic. Before you know it, everyone's "dancing" as one — and as the song says, these boys Don't Dance.

Rich.

Lovebirds will swoon for Gotta Go My Own Way, sung by Troy and Gabriella to goose-pimpling effect.

The movie's overall sheen is more startling when you learn that cast and crew did it with only three weeks for rehearsals.

"I designed these numbers knowing who I had doing them," Ortega said. "This cast is indescribable in terms of their passion, their commitment, their capability. They are extraordinary. What we accomplished in less than 30 days with less than three weeks of rehearsal, no one has done that. It doesn't exist in television history."

If HSM is anything, it's history in the making. Its fabulous ratings and album sales and sold-out concerts are likely to continue as long as these particular people are together to make it happen.

Already there's serious talk about an HSM3, possibly for the big screen. The effect the musical has had on the making of high school musicals has been made into a reality series that will premiere next month.

And there's a joke that all the principals will stick around for years and years, eventually making Rest Home Musical and its many sequels.

"It has turned on a whole new generation to musical storytelling, and that is a thrill," Ortega said. "That, for me, is the most thrilling sort of part of the success."

High School Musical 2 stars have own high style

By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - If imitation is a form of flattery, it's likely we'll see a lot of girls dressed like Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Monique Coleman this fall.

They're the female leads of High School Musical 2, which many a tween girl - and some fans both older and younger - have been counting down to the premiere of the movie Aug. 17 on the Disney Channel. Each of the young women has a distinct style: bohemian, high-style and body-conscious.

It's a bit different from what they wear on the screen: For example, Tisdale's Sharpay is all glitz and sparkle, but for an interview the real Tisdale shows up in a sophisticated Rebecca Taylor crocheted minidress and Moschino red platform sandals.

The success of the original <i>High School Musical 2.</i> went far beyond Disney's original intention to keep connected with tweens during the dreary winter months of 2006. The movie has been seen by more than 160 million people in more than 100 countries; its soundtrack was the best-selling album of 2006; and its stars became bona fide big names and trendsetters.

The red dress with a ruffle around the bustline that Hudgens' Gabriella wore in the movie's finale was actually a copy of a vintage dress that the actress owned in white. Similar styles were then offered by retailers for prom dresses and Halloween costumes, and it's what Mattel chose to dress its new singing Gabriella Barbie in.

Disney's Consumer Products division rushed out branded T-shirts, pajamas and backpacks into stores after failing to anticipate the initial demand for products, but this time there's a more cohesive marketing plan now with major retailers including Wal-Mart and Macy's, among others.

Potential breakout looks from the new movie include Sharpay's shiny star necklace or Gabriella's girlie white eyelet pieces.

Hudgens, Tisdale and Coleman talked with the AP about their own personal style - and even gushed like the high school girls they portray about how much they liked each other's looks:

---

VANESSA HUDGENS

Hudgens looks older than her 18 years when she's dressed up in an Alice McCall silver sleeveless blouse with a green ribbon around the neckline and Jimmy Choo snakeskin heels. She acknowledges, though, that as much fun as it's been having access to designer clothes and the occasions to wear them, she also likes to wear more comfortable bohemian-style clothes that match her personality.

Aside from the fedora moment she's having, she's been wearing a lot of minidresses and oversized off-the-shoulder T-shirts. She also loves clunky, chunky boots. But since she's in Los Angeles most of the time, she mostly wears sandals.

"Growing up, most of my clothes were hand-me-downs, or from Goodwill or a tag sale, but I didn't really care about my clothes,'' Hudgens says.

Or, at least she didn't care until she was on the verge of being a teenager.

"At 12 I got my first pair of Frankie Bs, my first pair of cool jeans,'' she recalls.

Hudgens met Tisdale on the set of a back-to-school Sears TV commercial long before they were reunited at East Side High. Hudgens said she always admired Tisdale's style even though she went through what they've dubbed her "fairy phase,'' wearing more than the norm of sparkly clothing.

Both Hudgens and Tisdale discourage their fans, especially young ones, from spending their money on pricey things with a fancy label.

"It's all about finding one cool piece - that's what I do at vintage shops, it's what I do at home. I pick one thing I really want to wear and plan everything around it,'' Hudgens says.

---

ASHLEY TISDALE

"Everyone goes through an awkward stage,'' announced Tisdale, who at 22 is clearly past hers.

She looks every bit the Hollywood starlet with perfectly styled hair and dark Chanel sunglasses, but Tisdale also seems very aware of all the ups and downs tween and teen girls go through, especially when it comes to their appearance.

She likes to see everyone put a bit of their personality into their look. She and Hudgens could walk into the same store, choose the same item but look totally different from each other. In fact, it's happened.

"One day we wore the same dress - it was a white summer dress. She wore it with these cute wedges and I wore it with shorts and a belt,'' she says.

Tisdale already started shopping for fall, picking up a parachute jacket from Ruehl No. 925 on this recent trip to New York.

Shopping for back-to-school clothes was a highlight of the year, she says, it was an annual tradition for herself, her sister and her grandmother when she still lived in New Jersey before moving to California. "I'd find that perfect outfit. It was a chance to be the new you - who you wanted to be.''

---

MONIQUE COLEMAN

She's the oldest of the bunch at 26, but Coleman says she's learned a lot about confidence and how to carry herself from her co-stars.

When she first began riding the <i>High School Musical 2.</i> bandwagon, she took the word of her stylist as gospel. She looked great but she didn't think she looked like herself.

"You know your body better than anyone and you know what you feel comfortable in,'' Coleman says, who plays the brainy character Taylor.

For her, key pieces include empire waist dresses (she's wearing a black silk one by Joie on this day) and shorts. She's very aware of her curvy figure and takes care to balance her outfit with a conservative bottom or top if her dress has a revealing neckline or her shorts are particularly short.

Coleman also knows what doesn't work: The loose bohemian styles that Hudgens favors. "I look like a balloon,'' Coleman says. That doesn't mean she has to be completely left out of the look, though. "I can always find one element of a trend that works,'' she says.

An off-the-shoulder top is her nod to boho.

Coleman says she can still play a high schooler because "my truest, most naked face looks 15 ... and without extensions I look 12.

She adds: "When I try to look older, I feel like I'm playing dress up.''

It's mid-morning in March on the Salt Lake City soundstage where Disney Channel's High School Musical 2 is shooting, and star Zac Efron, dressed in khakis, a white button-down shirt and blue tie, is doing push-ups smack in the middle of a set that looks exactly like a giant restaurant kitchen.

The athletic move seems worthy of high-school basketball star Troy Bolton, his character in the wildly popular Emmy-winning TV-movie about the jocks and brains of East High. But this drop-and-give-me-20 moment isn't in the script.

"I hate having low energy in scenes," Efron says, explaining his boot-camp routine. "Rather than psych myself up before, it's just easier to do push-ups and get your blood flowing a little bit."

He's not the only one who's amped on the set of this highly anticipated sequel. With only a 32-day shooting schedule, camera operators navigate quickly around industrial-size mixers and stainless-steel prep tables. A boom mic swings above a massive eight-burner stove covered with steaming pots, courtesy of dry ice.

This is Lava Springs Country Club, where the kids from East High get summer jobs. Troy and Chad (Corbin Bleu) are golf caddies and waiters. Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) is a lifeguard. Taylor (Monique Coleman) is the activities coordinator. Only Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) aren't on the employee list. Their family owns the place, so their responsibilities include lounging by the pool, playing golf—and winning the club's Midsummer Night's Talent Competition. Again.
