Hey all!

I know, first update in a while--whoa. But we are here with some exciting news! Our favorite bass player was featured on My Central Jersey in June (I honestly have no idea whether or not it was printed, if you do, please email me at: garbogirls@hotmail.com and let me know) and we wanted to share this amazing article! Bear with us and our slow uptake, because we didn't see this article until earlier today, so it's slightly outdated, haha.

" When Greg Garbowsky auditioned as a bass player with a start-up band, he had no idea where it would lead. He was a college freshman and didn't have clear-cut career goals, so with the blessing of his parents, he decided to give it a shot. The South Plainfield resident went to meet the members of the still-unnamed band.

"They gave me 15 minutes to learn two songs," he said. "A few days later, they called and said I got the job. Since then it has pretty much changed my life completely."

That would be an understatement, to say the least. The unnamed band is now called the Jonas Brothers — one of the hottest groups in the country. The band is currently on a European tour opening for Avril Lavigne, and in July the group starts its own summer tour, which is selling out arenas nationwide. (The group just announced another Madison Square show on Aug. 9. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. June 14 through www.livenation.com. Tickets for the group's shows at Madison Square Garden for Aug. 10 and 11 are sold out. The Jonas Brothers also play a sold-out show at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel on Aug, 16.)

"When we toured to promote the first album, we were playing at schools and assemblies," Garbowsky said. "We played shows where I knew everyone in the audience, which was about 10 people."

Garbowsky said the first album, "It's About Time,' was not a big seller, and the Wyckoff-based band was dropped by Columbia Records.

"I started to rethink things," he said. "I didn't know if the band was going anywhere. But besides being an employee of theirs, I really love the brothers. It wasn't just a job for me."

He stuck it out and in early 2007, the band started to take off. The Jonas Brothers were signed by Hollywood Records and next thing they knew, they were on the Hannah Montana tour with superstar Miley Cyrus.

"Miley is a very cool girl, energetic and funny," he said. "She's really a normal kid, much like the Jonases."

By year's end, the Jonas Brothers - Kevin, 20; Joe, 18, and Nick, 15 - were playing in Times Square for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in front of millions of people.

"Up until the tour, I had only played for 5,000 people," he said. "But you get used to playing in front of 20,000 people. The first time was exciting and nerve-wracking. I really worried about forgetting something or messing up. But at the same time I thought back to all of the concerts I went to growing up and how excited I'd get when the lights went down and the band came on stage. It's totally bizarre to be on the other side of that."

Cut from the same mold

Garbowsky, now 21, graduated from South Plainfield High School in 2004 and that fall enrolled in Seton Hall University in West Orange. In the spring of 2005, he had just finished his freshman year when he decided he wanted to go into music production. He was looking to change colleges when he got a call from Sam Persad, his music pastor at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains. One of Persad's friends had three sons who were putting together a band and were looking for a bass player. Persad wondered if Garbowsky would be interested — and the rest is history.

"I love performing, but the best part is developing relationships with the people I'm on tour with," he said. "When we get back on the bus, we sit and talk for hours. It's a great work atmosphere. Everyone feels like they're part of a family."

Garbowsky often visits the Jonas household for dinner or swim parties. He and the brothers seem to be cut from the same mold, praying before shows and careful not to let fame go to their heads.

"We try to keep things normal," he said. "We'll throw a football around during the day or go see the cities we're in. It's like a circus on tour, but our faith keeps us grounded."

He can't always get to church with such a busy schedule, but Garbowsky often listens to podcasts from his pastor. When he's home, he still plays music in church.

"I don't know how long this whole thing will last," he said. "It's in God's hands."

The band's popularity doesn't show any signs of slowing down. In the past few years, Garbowsky has visited 45 states and has played in Mexico and England. Recently, the group appeared on the season finale of "American Idol" and on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." He chronicles his adventures on his blog, which can be found at www.greggarbo.blogspot.com.

"It started out as something for family and close friends, but it's also something for me to look back on," he said. "I don't want to forget what I was feeling at the time."

Musically inclined

Garbowsky's musical talents were honed early on. He began playing violin in the third grade at John E. Riley Elementary School. He played drums and acoustic guitar in middle school and when he was 13, he asked his parents for a bass guitar for Christmas. He taught himself to play, and got a little help from Andrew Veiss, the middle school's band director. Garbowsky said Veiss would come in early once a week, on his own time, to give him private instruction.

"I give him a lot of credit for helping me in the formative first months when I was learning," Garbowsky said. "I doubt he even remembers me."

Veiss does remember Garbowsky, and called him a "good student and a pretty good drummer."

"It's awesome to hear where he is now," Veiss said. "I'm very proud of him."

Garbowsky and his friends formed a band called Level Zero and played places such as The Stone Pony in Asbury Park and the South Plainfield Police Athletic League building. He was in the school's jazz band and played snare drum in the high school marching band. His mother, Lois, is a dance teacher and his father, Robert, plays percussion in church. There was always a set of drums in the house, sparking an interest in music for Greg and his sister, Julie, 18.

"This is a wonderful experience for Greg," said Lois Garbowsky. "It's a blessing for him. I love when he's home, but I love hearing about how he's progressing. We'll have to go to a couple of shows this summer just so we can see him."

Garbowsky has enjoyed some of the perks of the industry, such as meeting many of the fans.

"There are a few people that figured out who the shadowy figure in the background playing the bass is," he said. "A few Jonas fans have contacted me through MySpace. They're really nice and I'm glad if I can be any sort of inspiration to them."

Another perk is that he has become an endorsed artist of Ampeg Amplifiers.

"They've let me take some new gear out on the road and use it before it's available in stores," he said.

Garbowsky never believed this level of success would happen so quickly. Even though he co-wrote a song called "Games" on the band's current CD, he has no desire to be famous.

"I've received a priceless education in the music industry, but for me, fame has never been appealing," he said. "I hope that playing live music and touring for a long time will improve my musicianship and also help to me meet more people in the music industry. But my heart has always been in studio production work and my dream is to be a producer. I feel the most complete when I'm working in a studio."

In order to pursue that goal, Garbowsky plans to move to Los Angeles in September, where the Jonas Brothers will be based as they film their new television show for the Disney Channel.

"Everyone in the music business is based in L.A.," he said.
